Foundation Stage

Husthwaite School introduced The Early Years Foundation Stage in September 2008
for the period of education from birth to five years. During this stage the children
work towards the 6 areas of learning and development, which most children are
expected to achieve by the end of their Foundation Stage (end of Reception).

We place strong emphasis on learning through play, the curriculum is delivered
through a combination of whole class activities, adult led focussed activities and
child initiated activities.

The 6 areas of learning and development are:

  1. Personal, Social and Emotional Development
  2. Communication, Language and Literacy
  3. Problem-solving, Reasoning & Numeracy
  4. Knowledge and Understanding of the World
  5. Physical Development
  6. Creative Development

In the Foundation Stage at Husthwaite Church of England School we:

  • encourage all children to develop lively questioning and curious minds so
that they are keen to learn and are receptive to new information
  • ensure children enjoy their learning
  • help children to acquire new linguistic, cognitive, social, physical and
practical skills which will provide a firm basis for further learning
  • see that children develop a positive attitude towards themselves, their school,
fellow pupils and adults they come into contact with
  • ensure that the children gain in self confidence, independence and in the
ability to be responsible for themselves
  • encourage the children to begin to develop social attitudes of co-operation
and understanding which will form the basis of their learning of respect for
    people
  • see that children begin to appreciate, and respect their immediate
    environment and the wider world

We believe that the Foundation Stage has intrinsic value and is concerned with the
development of the whole child, equipping them with skills that form the basis for
their future education.

We know that children come to school with a wide variety of experience and are at
different stages of development. We tailor our curriculum and planning to
accommodate all individual needs.
